"His mother was Bathsheba, the widow of Uriah" (Matthew 1:6 KJV). It was just a parenthetical statement found in the genealogy of Jesus concerning his son, Solomon. But for King David, the father of Solomon, it was so much more. It was...a label.

Twenty-eight generations had passed from David's adulterous sin with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband, Uriah. But even in the genealogy, the label stuck.

People can do that to us. In others’ eyes, our past failures, mistakes, and mess-ups can label us for life. But God did not do that to David. While the genealogist may have reminded us that Solomon was the son of Bathsheba, the widow of Uriah, a moment of one of David’s most significant failures, God re-labeled David as "a man after my own heart" (Acts 13:22).

That is the work of redemption! That is why His grace is amazing and His love is marvelous!
