Counting The Cost

In a recent press conference, Georgia Bulldog Head Coach Kirby Smart talked about the costs of leadership (with apologies to my good friend Brian Sutton, this one isn’t from Nick Saban).

“If we truly want to be honest and upfront about leadership, you can’t ignore the cost of leadership. Great leaders are willing to accept those costs. The first cost is that you will have to make hard decisions that negatively affect people you care about. The second is that you will be disliked despite your best attempt to do the best for the most. The third is that you will be misunderstood and won’t always have the opportunity to defend yourself. Those are the three costs that come from being a great leader." (Heim, Mark; AL.com; July 18, 2023)

Jesus taught us the importance of counting costs before undertaking anything significant, including leadership. “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it?” (Luke 14:28)

Leadership always involves costs and sacrifices. However, it also consists of the joy from obedience to the Savior who has called you. When you have counted the cost beforehand, you will rejoice at the foreseen outcome rather than the temporary struggle.
