Significance Isn't Always Glamorous

In the story of Israel's return from exile, Zerubbabel's rebuilding of the temple is recorded in Ezra 6:14-15. The temple's reconstruction restored the spiritual center of Israel with a grand celebration. What an honor! To build a place that represented the abiding presence of God on earth.

However, they did not rebuild the wall to protect the temple from invaders. Nehemiah undertook the critical, yet less glamorous, task of rebuilding Jerusalem’s wall 70 years later. Most would agree that wall-building is not nearly as attention-getting as temple-building.

Like Nehemiah, you may not have a glamorous role that attracts attention. However, the lesson of Nehemiah is that not all SIGNIFICANT work is GLAMOROUS. Most of us are called to tasks that might lack outward glory, but they are crucial in God's plan.

Oh, yes! Don’t forget that Nehemiah had an entire book in the Old Testament named after him, and we often turn to Nehemiah to teach timeless leadership principles. How’s that for significance?
