Flying Colors

According to Ellen Gutoskey in The Mental Floss, the phrase "with flying colors" has come to describe remarkable success. The phrase originated from the age of sailing ships. Historically, after a victorious naval battle, ships would proudly display their flags, known as "colors," upon returning to port. This act symbolized their triumph.

Over time, this nautical tradition transitioned into everyday language, evolving to describe any form of outstanding success. Today, whether it's acing an exam or excelling in a competition, achieving "with flying colors" signifies a commendable accomplishment.

As followers of Jesus, we will experience tests and trials. Circumstances do not always seem victorious. But may we always hear the clarion call of the Apostle Paul from Romans 8:37, “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” The term "more than conquerors" resonates with the idea of not just achieving victory but doing so in an overwhelmingly triumphant manner. In other words, you will pass this test "with flying colors."
