In His Image

“In His image.” Those three words astound me, fill me with a sense of purpose, and challenge me.

In Genesis 1:26-27, the Hebrew word “tselem” is translated as  “image”. “Let us make man in our IMAGE.” (verse 26) “So God created man in His own IMAGE.” (verse 28) Interestingly, the word “tselem” derives from the Hebrew word “tsel”, which means “shadow”: “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the SHADOW of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1)

Exploring the relationship between these two words reveals a simple truth. Just as a shadow mirrors the actions of the one casting it, we, as God’s image-bearers, reflect His character and actions in the world. Thus, we are challenged to “Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children.” (Ephesians 5:1)

Being made in God’s image incorporates a call to reflect His love and holiness. Just as a shadow moves in tandem with the person casting it, our lives should mirror His compassion and righteousness.

As His image, we are His representatives on earth, called to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him, being His shadow in our world.
