I'm An "Others"

People often refer to Hebrews 11 as the roll call of faith. The verses provide a litany of extraordinary men and women from the Scriptures. It begins with Abel, flows through Abraham, includes Sarah, and courses through the lineage of Jacob and Joseph through Moses and Rahab. “How much more do I need to say? It would take too long to recount the stories of the faith of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and all the prophets.” (Hebrews 11:32)

While I am encouraged by these amazing men and women, I have to confess that as I read about them, I often think, “Well, I’m no Abraham. I’ll never be Moses. David? Samuel? No way. I’m not even Jephthah (admit it, you probably don’t remember him). What could I do to be a part of the roll call?”

Then I ran across a name that better describes me…”Others”. It’s found in verses 35 and 36. Perhaps God will use you in some magnificent way where your name is as well known as the ones on this list. But most of us will be the “others.” We will not be well-known, famous, or acclaimed. But here is what God says about the “others”: “They were too good for this world!” (Hebrews 11:38)

I don’t know about you, but I would rather God say that about me than any other fame or acclaim that may be achieved. I am content to be a part of the “others” with all you other “others.”
