Several years ago, I took one of my granddaughters to a local fast-food place for lunch. I had eaten a late breakfast, so I wasn't hungry. I ordered a soft drink and got her a kid's meal. As she sat eating, I took one of her fries. She was so upset with me because I took one. She said, "Stop it! Those are mine!"
I thought, "Little girl, you don't understand who I am! I am the source of all your fries! I can take away all of your fries! I can smother you in fries! In fact, I am the Lord of the fries!" Remember, she was only four years old, so her selfishness can be excused.
I wonder how often I do the same thing to God. He asks me for a portion of finances, time, or talent, and I say, "Stop it! It's mine". I often need to be reminded that He gave me everything in the first place: my finances, my time, my talents. He can take it all away or smother me with them. Yet, when I joyfully return a portion to Him through tithing, I’m reminded of the blessing that comes from acknowledging His provision.
The Lord reminds us in Haggai 2:8, “The silver is mine, and the gold is mine” (Haggai 2:8). As Corrie Ten Boom once said, “Hold everything in your hands lightly. Otherwise, it hurts when God pries your fingers open.”
