The Apple of His Eye

Several years ago, One of my grands was sitting in my lap looking intently in my eyes. I asked her what she was looking at, thinking she had this amazing affection for me that caused her to look lovingly in my eyes. She replied, "I can see myself in your eye." As she looked at me, she could see her reflection in the dark pupil of my eye.

The Psalmist said to God: "Keep me as the apple of your eye..." (Psalm 17:8 NIV). The phrase "apple of your eye" was an ancient Hebrew idiom translated as "little man of the eye." It's that reflection you can see of yourself in the pupil of someone's eye when you are really close to them.

Being the apple of someone's eye means being very dear and meaningful to them. It means being cherished and loved. And that's exactly how God feels about us!

When the Psalmist says, "Keep me as the apple of your eye," he reminds us that God desires to be so close to us that we can see our reflection in His eyes. That's how close He wants to be to you today!
